(a) Plain light pastel colours are preferred.

(b) Similarly, a single colour or shade is preferred.

(c) Heavy colours should be screened down.

Details Appearing on Cheques

(a) The crossing should be conspicuous and be placed as close as possible to the centre of the cheque. The crossing should not encroach upon the 5/8" clear band on the bottom of the cheque.

(b) Any printing of customer's name for the personalisation of cheque should preferably be adjacent to or above the signature and should not encroach upon the 5/8" clear band.

(c) With certain mechanised systems, it is necessary for cheque accounts to be numbered.Where it is necessary to print an account number in non-magnetic ink, this printing must be located outside the 5/8" clear band. In no circumstances may machine language printing (E-13B characters) be printed in other than magnetic ink in the 5/8" clear band.

(d) To minimise the possibility of mutilations and to help reduce mechanical handling problems, it is desirable to avoid perforations at the right (Leading) and bottom (Aligning) edges of cheques. Pinhole perforations are not acceptable. Cheque stubs should therefore continue to be printed to the left of the cheque and any attachable statement should be placed to the left as in the case of continuous form cheques. Care should be taken to ensure that the right hand (Leading) and bottom (Aligning) edges of the cheques are neatly cut and not perforated.

(e) Asterisks (*) produced by a machine printer can be used as protection symbols only at the beginning or at the end, or both, of the amount. Other graphic elements such as dashes, stars, periods, etc., should not be used in place of the asterisk.

(f) The printed text "No signature below this line" or "Do not write below this line" should be printed in a colour that will not be seen on the cheque image. Use scanner blind colour or a light colour for this purpose. Thus, the customer still sees this information but it will not appear in the image of the cheque.

(g) The Bank/State/Branch code should also be preprinted on the top right hand corner of the cheque as an added means of security.
