MICR Encoding
A clear margin of 5/8"
deep and extending the full length of the lower edge of the cheque should be available
to enable the MICR encoding to be printed. Any printing in magnetic ink in this area
shall be in accordance with the prescribed specifications for E-13B characters of
the International Standardisation Organisation. A detailed description of the characters
and specifications of the printed images are not included here as these published
as a standard in Britain and the U.S.A.
The clear band area
is reserved for the MICR encoding fields. These fields on areas of the code
lines are (reading from the right edge of the cheque):
(a) The Amount Field;
(b) The Transaction
Code Field;
(c) The Bank/State/Branch
Field; and
(d) The Cheque Serial
Number.
The specifications for each field of the MICR code line are as follows:
(a) Amount field.
Fixed in digit capacity and in position, consists of l0 digits plus the MICR amount
symbol to open and to close. The right hand edge of the opening symbol is nominally
5/16" measured from the right hand edge of the cheque. The maximum capacity
is
RM99,999,999.99.
(b) Transaction Code field accommodates
a transaction code and usually an account number. The transaction code will consist
of 2 characters, (and no symbols) for interbank transactions. The right hand edge
of the right hand digit is nominally 1- 15/16" from the right edge of the cheque.
The code numbers are listed in the existing KLACH User Manual. The other part of
the Transaction Code field, normally accommodating the account number, is fixed in
capacity and position of 10 digit spaces. It also has space for the MICR Transaction
Code field symbol in the extreme right hand position. The right hand edge of the
Transaction Code field symbol is 2 - 5/16" from the right edge of the cheque.
(c) The Bank/State/Branch
field is fixed in position, capacity and layout, having a Bank/State/Branch/Check
digit symbol at the right, then five digits, then a Dash symbol and two digits for
the Bank. The five digits consist of two digits for the State (including SPTF), t\vo
digits for the branch of a bank in a State and a check digit. The check digit used
is Modulus 10 with weighting 3, 7, 1 as adopted by the American Bankers Association.
The identification number for the Bank, State and Branch is assigned by Jabatan Pengawalan
Bank and is available in the KLACH User Manual.
The right hand edge of the Bank/State/Branch field is 3 - 13/16" from the right
edge of the cheque.
(d) Cheque Serial Number field usually
accommodates the cheque serial number or other information the drawee bank may require.
A maximum of six digits can be printed in this field. The Auxiliary Domestic field
is bracketed by two domestic field symbols. The right hand edge of the right hand
symbol is 5-1/16" from the right edge of the cheque.
