Chops. Seals and Stamps
Chops, seals and
stamps must be placed on a different location from the signature. In no case must
they overlap with the signature area.
(a) For Signature Without Chop
(i) Advise customers to
sign in the location designated for signatures. Banks can facilitate this by making
such pens readily available at the counters.
(ii) Customer's signature(s)
should not encroach or overlap any lines, words or text pre-printed on the cheque.
In the case of multiple signatures on a single cheque, ensure that signatures do
not overlap each other.
(b) For Signature Using Chop or With Chop
(eg. Chinese Chop and Company Chop)
(i) In addition to the
above, ensure that the chop used produces a clear and legible image on the cheque.
Request customers to replace any aged chops, which may have been flattened or have
lines or words missing.
(ii) Ensure that the chop
does not encroach on the signatures or any lines or words preprinted on the cheque.
(iii) Advise customers
to stamp the chop in dark ink, preferably black. In instances where red ink must
be used, ensure that the chop image on the cheque is clear and firm.
(c) Use of Bank Chop (eg. Bank Crossing)
(i) Stamp the chop in dark
ink, preferably black or blue black and ensure that the chop used produces a clear
and legible image on the cheque.
(ii) Ensure the chop does
not encroach on the signature(s), amount field or any lines or words preprinted on
the cheque.
Facsimile Signatures/Franking Machine Signatures
Generally, such
signatures are not suited to be used for cheque imaging. This is due to the fact
that often the facsimile is inside a frame of diagonal lines and uses a varying colour
set (typically, the colours blend from one colour to another from left to right of
the facsimile signature). However, such signatures may be used if:
(a) They use a single
dark colour (preferably black for better contrast); and
(b) They do not
have a frame around them with any other information like diagonal lines. In other
words, the facsimile signature is just the signature itself.
